    Hello

Wow my first message after all these years coming here to view all the images.

I have a PS camera that has died and I'm thinking of a DLSR camera. Wide angle and around 300mm lens with it and would like suggestions on brands to look into.

    Hi James,

Welcome back and I would decide how much you want to spend and then check out the SLR cameras in that price range. I like Nikon and own the D300S but the cannon models in the same price range do a good job also. I also have the Olympus E-500 (SLR) and it does a fair job with the lens that I have. It has a soft focus compared to the Nikon D300S. I also have the Olympus C-8080 (not SLR) it does great with portraits and good with its short range of zoom.

    Hi James
Choosing a camera that is right for is not an easy task. I own a Canon 7D, and happy with my gear. I own a couple of lens. 100-400, 400 prime, and 17-40 lens. I have a few more, but almost never use them.
What kind of photography interests you? Landscape, wildlife, or perhaps macro. With landscape, you can step back a little and not buy a top of the line camera. With wildlife, you need a better than average camera, and lens. You would want something that has fast and accuratre focusing. You end up paying dearly for those features. Now for Canon or Nikon, both are good brands. I hear that Canon does have a faster focusing system, but you can't ingnore the quality Nikon can produce.

I just want to do mostly landscape, but I want to photograph some nature stuff never did that before and would like to try it. I'm an old nikon guy many years ago, but open to options so what mid range price would you suggest for canon camera? Or is the canon 7D mid range.

Thank you. I'm looking at mid range prices I have had a PS for so many years and now after coming on here and seeing everybody's photos has me wanting a DSLR. What nikon mid range camera would be good?

    Re: Hello

Hi James and a good first message.

I agree with the comments from both Don and Chuck. I have had both cameras and I now shoot with Nikon, and as Don mentioned if you need fast focusing speed for flight shots than Canon has the advantage there, if you don't need the speed you can go with the mid-range camera for either camera. I suggest that on the lens to stay away from the low end ones, they are not going to give you tack sharp images. Also you may want to look on the Internet for price ranges of the cameras to suit your budget to get some sort of ideas and then pick a model from Canon and Nikon and compare them against each other to help you decide on the way you want to go with a system.

I hope this helps with your decision?

    Re: Hello

James, I just thought of this and not sure if this would be a good time for you but Checkout the camera stores in your area as there are some GOOD Black Friday deals going on.

I checkout out a store here in Toronto and they have a D7000 with a wide angle lens for $250.00 off for their sales.
