These shots are very nice, and I bought a new Nikon DSLR that replaced my point n shoot and have not mastered the camera yet, would a 300mm get me some shots like these?

Wayne, thanks again for the comments and yes these sure are neat birds. Most of the time they are skittish, but this group seemed to be fine.

Thanks James, and I remember you saying that you got the new camera. It takes time getting used to it and knowing the settings but you will just have to practice a bit, since it is sure different than a point and shoot that is for sure.

I think you will get some good shots with the 300mm, but the subject would have to be in closer a bit more. In these images I think you would have been just fine with these birds, and the only way tell tell if the lens is good enough for the job is give it a try and see what the results are for you.

Thanks for the information and I think I will try to give this a go and see how the lens works out with the birds in my area.

No problem James, let me know if you have any questions that you may need help with with the new camera or photography related.
