Need help with error message in Lightroom

I just purchased and installed Lightroom 3 (my first Lightroom purchase). It installed properly, and converted my catalog from Elements 7.0. However, every time I click on a photo or a keyword I get an error message saying that Lightroom has experienced an error and has to close. I then get an option of Debug, Send error message, or don't send. No matter what I click, the program closes. I wasted 2 1/2 hours of my day off today on the phone with Adobe tech support. After all this time, they told me this is a "permission issue" with Windows XP, and that I have to contact either Dell or Microsoft. I then called Microsoft tech support, and they told me that for $60.00 a tech can call me back within 24 hours. I said OK, but they didn't call back today, and I have to work all day tomorrow. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, but it didn't help. Does anyone have any idea what to do????

And another issue: I also bought Elements 8.0, but couldn't convert my catalog from 7.0. The Adobe tech was unable to find my 7.0 catalog on my computer (he took over my computer), even though obviously it must be somewhere because I HAVE a catalog in 7.0 with 35,000 photos in it!

I'm stressed beyond belief by all this. Help!!!!!

Darlene, delete the database files so that you have a fresh database for LR. Now just go to your images folder and import one folder into Lightroom and see if that will help allowing you to get by the errors you have been getting. I think that the problem could be tags that can hang LR. If you prefer uninstall and install lightroom and try just to import from the folder and don't use the catalog to import and lets see what happens there.

Well I don't think this is a permmision issue with XP, but an import problem. Let me know what happens and we can try another thing or 2.

Here is a link that might be of some help fore your last problem.

I can understand the stress part, sometimes the system upgrades here cause stress.

Let us know how you are making out with this.

    Dennis,

I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling LR, but that didn't help. I will try your suggestion of doing this again and then importing a folder instead of my Elements catalog, although I think it automatically prompted me to convert my Elements catalog and I don't know if I can get around that.

I hope it's not a problem with my keywords, as I have 42,000 photos and it will be a disaster if I can't import them with their keywords.

Try it only on a small folder and see what it does there. I know Glen had an issue at one time as we spoke briefly at the park about it today, and I'm sure that he will reply to this message as well and will advise what he found out.

I hope that you can resolve this as you mentioned that your keywords issue will be a problem for sure.

Darlene, just a question have you been on their forum looking for others that may have the same issues that you are having? I did a quick check and there seems to be issues with the 64 bit systems, and from what I have seen there is no fix at this time for those. Just a thought, maybe I will look in there ad well as I need to upgrade my version to 3 but will wait and see what issues are there.

I found that LR became buggy when the Database became too large, LR would often hang. This happened more on my old system which was XP and 4gig of memory. I now have a win7 system with 12gigs and haven't had the same problem. Not sure how you store you images, what i normally do is when i return from a shoot I create a directory like: D\Photos\20100814HighPark\ and move the images of my CF card into that folder then import my image files into LR. on my old system i would create a new LR catalog every 3-6 months so that the catalog would never get too large.

I tried importing say 500 images and see if it crashes... and go from there.

    Glen and Dennis,

I tried importing some folders directly into Lightroom today, but I couldn't even get that far--once I made one click, the error message came up and everything froze. I had to leave the program.

I had called Microsoft Thursday after talking with Adobe tech support. They said they'd call back that day, but never did. This afternoon, I called again, and was told that someone from Microsoft's Media Edition group would call me this afternoon. I waited and waited, and no one ever called. I left my computer on while I ran some errands and did some local birding. My boyfriend came over later and I opened Lightroom to show him what was going on, and to my immense amazement it seemed to be working fine! I've closed and opened it 4 times now, and it hasn't locked up once. Is it possible that Microsoft remotely solved the "permission issue"? I'm just astounded it's working now.

Now, if I can just upgrade my Elements 7.0 catalog to Elements 8.0.....

That's great Darlene... sorry i couldn't have been more help. I'm just glad that you are up and working now. Software gremlins are always a pain, spending hours and getting no where is never fun. Going through some of that myself right now... air is a little blue.

Darlene, that is great news that this is working now for you, and Microsoft cannot get into your computer unless you are there to grant them permission. Strange thing to why this works now.
