I have been thinking about landscape photography for the last few months, this is something that I have really not done in a very long time. Plus we are going to be heading up to Algonquin Park this year and hope to do a lot there. So it had me thinking about ND filters so that I can get very slow shutter speeds. Wow the range of filters and the costs of some not cheap. Vari-ND from Light Craft and Singh Ray over $300 US and then I looked into the 10 f/stops filters here in Canada both B+W and Lee were over $200 CDN.
But for me, I don't know how often I would be using this sort of filter, I know in Algonquin Park it will get used, and maybe up north once, so I wanted to keep my costs down. So I found one called Cameron Fader ND 1-8 f/Stops, and I checked Vistek and Henry's and Vistek was out of stock and Henry's had them. The cost was $100.00, and so I decided that I would be willing to spend that amount and go cheap here.
I ran some tests when I got home and I have to say that I was happy to get the shutters speed way down in broad daylight. The one thing I found is that the eye peice needed to be covered to avoid stray light coming in as it will effect the image. The other thing I found out it that if you go past the point marker on the filter not a good thing at all.
I checked my images and found that once I drop the shutter speed down the cars that were driving by all had a blur effect to them which was neat. In all, even though I went cheap on the filter, I was happy with the results with my tests and now I need to head out and try this on water and see if I can get the milky look, but all in good time.
Will share some images when I get out with this filter.
