Hi James. I don't see why you can't use a teleconverter with that lens. I am not sure how much quality you would loose. That would be a big concern to me.
Don
My take James is that it will not work with this lens and I know Dennis could answer this better than I could.

Thanks Don and Tom for your input. I will wait and see what Dennis has to say about the converter and his suggestions.
James some of the lower end lens won't work with the TC so you need to watch spending your money for nothing here. Then again I could be wrong man.
James, this is a good question and the answer would be no. This is a low end lens and I think f/5.6 and a TC 1.4 would make this f/8. The problem is that it is a zoom lens for one and would make it so slow to focus lock for one, the other is that I don't think you would get auto focus. If you know someone that has a converter to try his or hers and see for yourself. I would not waste money on the converter with that lens.
Now on the other hand if you had the 300mm f/4 which is a great lens and wanted the extra reach go and get the converter and that would give you 420mm. I know that the converter will work with this combo for sure as I have used it and my my uses that lens now. Hope this helps in some small way.

Yes would be a very good lens for nature and birding photography. The lens is around $1200.00 and the the converter and you should be good, and my wife uses this lens and converter with the D40 and it produces some nice images, as well I took this lens to Florida one year and was blown away with the image quality.
