    Drobo verion 2

Some time ago I wrote a BLOG on my Drobo unit fan going on me. I thought I would be able to replace the fan myself rather than send it from Canada to the USA, so I looked for the original fan here in Canada and eneded up with not being able to get one here and would either have to order the fan from the USA and I wanted a backup fan, the total cost would be $40.00 US funds, shipping, and customs extra. So I decided that before I ordered the origial fan type that I would see if I could get the same size fan with the same 60 CFM air flow rated on the fan that went south.

I did a serach on Tiger Direct, and found a 90mm B-Gears fan that was rated at 78 CFM and the cost was much cheaper in fact $24.99 with shipping for 2 fans.

They shipped this from the US and shipped by UPS and I was floored as we all know UPS charges an arem and a leg for customs fees, today there was a knock on the door and UPS guy handed me the box and said have a great day. Wow is that not a suprise no charges.

Installed the fan into the unit and installed all the 4 drives only to find out one drive did not make it from the over heating of the Drobo, not a big deal will use the 3 for the time being until I know that the drives in there will not over heat on me.
The fan has 3 wires, and figured out the 2 that I needed and temp connected to the wire with the connector to the Drobo main board, worked like a charm, reversed the wires to make sure and the fan did not work so I knew what I needed to do to have the fan working.

So a few hours later and the backup still going, and not an issue with the Drobo warning me of a problem. Fan in back still blowing out cool air.

The fan was easy for me to replace, but if you don't feel right about taking it a part send your unit into Drobo. But in all it is rather simple, more plastic clips to push out then anything else.

So I hope that this fan will give me a couple of years, but I have another one just incase the fan dies.

Thanks Chuck, glad to get this box up and running again, missed having it to backup my images but right now running it to test to make sure that the fan does not fail again, and that I don't get any over heating before I start putting data on it.
Right now I have all my digital images backing up to it to put the unit through the pace.
