    Backing up images?

Hey all, I'm in need of something to backup my images and I'm looking for suggestions on what you all use for your image backups. I have a bit of money to play around with not a whole lot but what like to hear your ideas on what you use so that I can go out this weekend and purchase a backup system.

    Thanks

I have a friend that is heading over to the US right now and he is going to get the Iomega 2 TB drive from Bestbuy. I have also given him some cast to pick up one for me as well.
They are on sale $60.00 off the price brining it down to $149.00 US and the only issue is that it is USB 2 but the price is right as hard drives have climbed up by 25%

Wayne thanks for the information, I wonder if they carry a USB 3 version there as I would be willing to spend the extra cash for it. I'm going to head over to their store now and if they don't have a USB 3 version I just may pick this up as it sounds like a great deal.

    Re: Backing up images?

Hi Guys, very interesting that the Iomega drive came up in a message here.

I just picked up one this week as the Drobo fan that I put in is not strong enough and is shutting the system down, and I decide that I would go out and look for something that I could use in the mean time. I picked this unit up and was not sure if I was going to keep it or not and take it back. Mine is USB 3, and I have to say that this unit is not going back as the transfer rate is amazing on this unit. 18-20 mb/seconds.

The price in the US is very good for this drive and even with USB 2. Now remember, that is on the ports on the device that is USB 2 and not the device itself so your transfer rates should still be as good as mine.

Tom if this is for backups only, this would be just fine.

Dennis, I picked up one at Bestbuy here in the USA and I was told they only come in USB 2 only at this time. Maybe an error on your part here? I will install this on Friday night, but I have it out of the box and I like the looks and hope that it performs as you mentioned that would be nice.

Thanks Dennis, have mine installed. Question about the drive size only shows 991 GB?

The drive is set for Raid 1 which means that each drive has the same data on it and if one goes, the other drive retains all the data, and that is why you are seeing that amount of HD space. You can change this to Raid 0 which I did and or None and that means if one drive goes you lost the data on both the drives. So you need to think this one through on how you want the data, Oh yes setting it to none means you get all the hard drive space 2 Tb.

I have a backup of my images on the Homeserver as well as another drive, so if I loose a drive I should be just fine, and in most cases I could replace the drive and backup to it again.

Well I can use the HD space and have set it to none, is there a disadvantage to this?

    Re: Backing up images?

    Tom,
I am not sure how the Iomega defines None. Does the box see 2 hard drives? I am not a bi fan of Raid 0. With the Raid 0 config, you do double you hard drive, with a slight uplift in performance, but the short coming to me ins not worth it. If 1 disk fails you loose all you data. I would prefer to have each drive seperate, so if 1 drive goes south on you, you only loose the data on 1 drive.
